I am part of this powerful global movement empowering women to end hunger.  There is overwhelming evidence that the end of world hunger cannot be achieved if gender inequality persists. Women bear the major responsibility for meeting basic needs, yet are systematically denied the resources, freedom of action and voice in decision-making to fulfill that responsibility.

My mother was raised by my single grandmother during a time when there was no school lunch program in her area. Her teachers sent her home for lunch, where she would often find nothing to eat or would have crackers with ketchup for her lunch. My mother remembers occasionally asking my grandmother why she wasn’t eating dinner, and my grandmother would always respond with, “I’m not hungry” or “I already ate”; my mother is sure that my grandmother was going without so that she could have dinner. As a result of her experience, my mother raised me to help others when I can, whether it is with goods, money, or knowledge/skills. My daughter has learned this as well, as she started and operated a weekend backpacks program for schoolchildren as a Sterling Scholar project. Women can do amazing things when they have the opportunity.

Here are some examples of the tangible impact your investment can have:

$25 could provide one person with Functional Adult Literacy training so she can read and write

$60 could provide one woman with a microfinance loan and financial literacy training so she can start a small business, earn an income, and support her family

$120 could train one volunteer leader in Africa who will educate families about the importance of keeping their daughters in school so that they marry later

$230 could train one Elected Woman in India to be an effective local council member and ban child marriage in her village
